Following the death of Rutger Hauer in 2019, Paul Verhoeven said that he regretted letting Hauer do this movie. Hauer had already signed up before his international career took off, and he was quickly becoming an established name with movies like I falchi della notte (1981), Blade Runner (1982), and Osterman Weekend (1983). Hauer wanted out because playing a thieving, murdering, and raping scoundrel in this movie could be damaging to his career, but Verhoeven wouldn't release him from the project. It was the source of much friction between both men during filming, and afterwards when Hauer, much to Verhoeven's dismay, started to criticize his style of directing and the unreleased movie. Verhoeven also admitted that he "wasn't very open-minded at the time", and that he and Hauer had made their peace over time.
