Aaron Spelling approached Dick Van Patten as his first choice to play Dr. Adam Bricker. He was already doing La famiglia Bradford (1977), and was unavailable. The role was given to Bernie Kopell, a best friend of Van Patten's. Appearing as a guest star, Van Patten played several different characters over the course of the series. FACT CHECK: Van Patten did play Dr. O'Neill, a similar character to Adam Bricker, in the highly rated 1976 TV movie pilot, also called the Love Boat. He was the funny, bumbling, cute ship doctor in the pilot, not like Adam Bricker's lady-killer character. Spelling wanted Van Patten to keep playing the O'Neill character when this went to series; but Van Patten declined, having been offered a starring role in his own series, Eight is Enough. Then Spelling went to Kopell and offered him a different but similar character, Dr. Adam Bricker.
