The pilot opening theme song featured a calm instrumental played over archive footage of the cast, as opposed to the well-known adrenalin-pumping guitar riff theme that was played over the cast's "rock star" roll call as they let loose while out of character and looking into the camera at their fans. This was done in an effort to avoid any embarrassment in case the series wasn't renewed for a second season. Aaron Spelling wanted to insure the cast could save face and not be regarded as "hot shots" whose self-esteem could possibly be crushed by an abrupt cancellation, thus the first season's humble opening.
