There was speculation that Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon were having real sex in the sex scene between Annette and Sebastian, given that they were a couple at the time and everything about the scene looked real. Director Roger Kumble however has confirmed that the sex was simulated. The actors were not even fully naked when filming as in the entire scene each one is only visible from the waist up.
