While it is stated that it would have been obvious Valance was killed by a rifle bullet, this is simply not true. It was very common - and economical - for Westerners to carry a pistol and a lever action rifle that chambered the same ammunition. This is still true in modern times, where Winchesters and other old west style rifles are available in a variety of pistol calibers.
