Upon numerous international tributes to director Alan Parker' when he died in the summer of 2020, film critic Catherine Shoard undertook an epic oral interview with the cast and crew of "Fame" for England's newspaper The Guardian ("An Oral History of Fame, 40 Years On" published on August 19, 2020) in which she called the film "an enduring hit that essentially defined Alan Parker's career" with the legacy of the film "spawning countless official and unofficial rip-offs." Describing the film as " a crowd-pleaser that contained a heart of ice" she elaborates: "For all the fun and legwarmers, this isn't some starry-eyed fantasy. Rather, its edge and its pessimism made it a remarkably responsible piece of filmmaking, with a conclusion about the wisdom of pursuing a career in the arts that is ambivalent at best. Such skepticism may come as a surprise to a younger generation accustomed to more upbeat takes on 'making it'.
