In the original Scream (1996), Billy talks about the effect horror movies can have on people's psychological well-being. At one point, he makes reference to The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Clarice Starling's "flashbacks of her dead father". This line would eventually foreshadow Sam's visions of her own dead father, Billy.
