In an early prototype design made during the early development, Robotnik was drawn as a cyborg-pirate before be drawn as a green demon overlord that almost resembled Ganondorf, the main antagonist of The Legend of Zelda video game franchise. The latter design was most likely scrapped for possible copyrights issues with Nintendo.
