One of the show's running gags was whether or not Tommy Strawn had a job. Thomas Mikal Ford, who played Tommy Strawn, explained that the recurring joke was the result of real life banter between Martin Lawrence and himself over the character's employment status during a table read. The writers found the actors' exchange hilarious and decided to add their back and forth to the show. In 2016, Tisha Campbell (Gina) revealed that Tommy was a counselor at the Boys & Girls Club.
