One evening after filming Trevor Howard, who was playing a British army colonel, kept his uniform on and went on a pub crawl followed by police officers, who because of his high rank appearance, didn't dare intervene. Eventually, though, they decided to arrest him but when Trevor told them that he wasn't an officer but an actor in costume they arrested him for impersonating an officer. The production people and Carol Reed had to use all their influence and tact to get him released. Trevor just shrugged it off saying that he wanted a change of pace and certainly got it.
