When Father Karras is listening to the tape of the demon's voice in his dorm room, you can clearly hear the voice say "Merrin" twice. This is Max von Sydow's character's name, and suggests that the two have met before, which is confirmed elsewhere in the film. In fact, the sequel L'esorcista II - L'eretico (1977) and prequels L'esorcista - La genesi (2004) and Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist (2005) show widely differing accounts of their first encounter.
