A Stargate is a machine having the capability to open a wormhole. A Wormhole is a hypothetical way of space travel, also called an Einstein-Rosen Bridge, named after scientists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen. According to them, a wormhole should be capable of uniting two distant points in the universe, creating a "hole" in the Space-Time Continuum in order to cross from one point to another in a brief period of time. The name wormhole was given after a comparison between the Universe and an apple with a worm moving inside. The same concept was used in Contact (1997), Stargate (1994) and their TV series Stargate SG-1 (1997) and Stargate Atlantis (2004).
