According to the filmmakers, Hedorah in this movie is meant to be male because they considered the original Hedorah from Godzilla - Furia di mostri (1971) to be female. There are subtle nods to their genders in their designs. The original Hedorah's eyes were deliberately made to resemble a crudely drawn female vagina, as director Yoshimitsu Banno thought it would make "her" creepier. Hedorah in this movie has a long, whip-like appendage extending from one of his arms, which was meant to be a phallic symbol to contrast with the original Hedorah's female-inspired design elements. However, due to most of Hedorah's scenes being deleted, this "whip" is barely visible in the movie.
