In July 1790, Marie Antoinette formed a secret pact with the influential politician Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau (1749-1791). The pact was in part based on their shared interest in establishing a constitutional monarchy, and in part on the queen promising financial rewards to Mirabeau. Mirabeau died in 1791 due to pericarditis, depriving the queen of a key ally. Their secret pact was revealed to the public in 1792, damaging the reputations of both of them. Mirabeau's remains were subsequently removed from the Panthéon, as he was seen as a traitor.
