The various losses the employees describe are deliberate references to various films. When Pam describes the death of her aunt, she's actually describing the plot of Million Dollar Baby. When Ryan is describing the death of a cousin during an African safari, he's actually describing the death of Mufasa from The Lion King. Kevin makes reference to the film Weekend at Bernie's when describing the death of an uncle, as Michael finally catches on.
