Peter tells Meredith, "All animals are programmed to protect their young."
Not only do numerous species leave their young to fend for themselves, specifically bull sharks do this as well. They give birth in shallow nurseries in brackish or fresh water. this is done to limit the amount of predators since the parents do not care for them.
