When a scientist suggests using a spread-focus laser on the asteroid to heat it till the point of fracture, NASA director Truman replies "that's like shooting a BB gun at a freight train". Apparently, although a laser would very likely not be enough to fracture a Texas-sized asteroid. Lasers are known to deflect meteoroids away, much more effective than BB gun pellets would be on freight train armor.
