There were several instances of misuse of military unit names. A regiment is an organization of several battalions. A sergeant would not have the authority to organize one. A squadron is a battalion-sized unit in cavalry organizations. It would be too large for this type of operation. A platoon would be more appropriate. This would be the smallest unit commanded by a commissioned officer.
