At the end of the film, John Connor says that Skynet does not have a centralized computer base and instead exists spread out over the internet. If it then launches a nuclear attack, it would completely destroy the internet (since it's infrastructure is based in cities, as well as the electric plants required to power it), and would effectively be committing suicide. Because of this, no Terminators from the future would exist, thus negating the entire story.
