Rick (by radio) advises Malorie of the need to remove the blindfold of one person in her boat to successfully navigate the rapids (and thus sacrificing that person's life in the process); logically Rick cannot have known this before the first group of sighted people arrived by boat, and the first group could not have arrived without Rick's advice.
