Thanos explains that his motive for wanting to kill 50% of the population of the universe is to stop resources from being spread too thin and everyone suffering as a result. However, it wouldn't take more than a couple of generations for that population to be restored to its original size. Thanos was perhaps hoping that the remaining 50%, knowing the state of the universe with double that population, would seize the opportunity, and limit growth - this idea might have been implied in Avengers: Endgame, when he tells the Avengers that they should have been more grateful that he provided them with "salvation".
