When Sméagol/Gollum falls into the lava, he sinks while the ring floats. In fact, lava, albeit a fluid, is sufficiently dense that a body would not sink into it, and rather sufficiently hot that the body would burst into flames. Metal, in the form of, say, a ring, is denser than rock and would sink, although it might melt before it sank very far.
