When Lincoln rides through the battlefield outside of Petersburg, he removes his hat as he passes by a large group of fallen soldiers. In this scene, there is an officer riding right behind Lincoln, and behind that officer is the soldier riding with the Union flag. When Lincoln puts his hat back on and rides past the Confederate flag, the soldier with the Union flag is now riding right behind Lincoln.
