No single nuclear bomb currently on Earth could have destroyed the Mothership. Especially not one small enough to be transported by Hillyer's Attacker. Considering that each atmospheric ship was 15 mi. in diameter, it would have taken something the size of the Soviet Tsar Bomba alone to destroy each one in its totality! But the Tsar Bomba would have been too large to carry as well.
