When Travis drives to Charleston to propose to Gabby, he crosses the South Carolina border on a two-lane country road. Coming from Wilmington, there is no such crossing which would not be dozens of miles out of the way for Travis to drive; he would have crossed on US 17 at Calabash, NC and Little River (North Myrtle Beach), SC, which is a four-lane divided highway. This is the most direct route to Charleston and certainly the route a man in a hurry would take.
