When word arrives that Abner "Cherub" Overton has been killed in action soon after the Class of 1917 arrives in France, Marty places a black ribbon at his page of the class yearbook. On the day the war ends, when he learns of the death of Red Sundstrom and he does the same for Sundstrom, there is still only Overton's black ribbon, whereas in real life six members of that class had been killed in action at that point.
