Nils saws down the stock and barrel of his rifle so that he can easily put in in his inside coat pocket and carry it concealed with the intent to use it at close range. However, when he shoots the bridal gown shop guy the rifle still has its now useless scope attached to it, which would also make it very hard to carry in a coat pocket.
