Both Maria and David have light blue eyes, whereas their son, Thomas has dark brown eyes which, genetically, is highly improbable if not impossible. But, this may be intentional on the part of the filmmakers. What Gregor remembers most about Maria is her blue eyes, whereas Gregor has light brown eyes. Until he holds a gun on Thomas and says goodbye to him, Gregor has not seen David, who then rushes in and stands between Thomas and Gregor. At this point, Gregor would realize David could not be Thomas' father, which would go a long way toward explaining why the movie ends as it does.
