When Ray and Emma leave Bakersfield and head towards San Francisco, they are driving north through the Central Valley. When they are stopped by the big gap, supposedly caused by the San Andreas fault, the gap is at a right angle to the road, essentially on a east-west line. The San Andreas Fault runs SE to NW through the valley, so it could not be at a right angle to the highway.
