At one point while examining the DNA strand decoded from the alien face's signal, McConnell says, "That DNA looks human." They are examining only a short strand of DNA, perhaps a couple dozen base pairs. The human genome contains around 3 billion base pairs, and only around 7% of those genes are unique to humans. He would never have been able to recognize 'human' DNA on sight without having committed the entire genome to memory.
