David's first breakthrough in finding out what happened to Claire is spotting a street sign reflected in the windshield of an SUV she took a photo of, but when David finds the place where the photo was taken, you can see the nearest intersection is at least half a block away in the background, so there's no way such a distant street sign could have had a large enough reflection to be legible.
