As the Union troopers leave Newton's Station, the wounded Col. Miles orders a message be sent to General Nathan Bedford Forrest informing him of the trooper's destination is Baton Rouge. By this point in time, Forrest was near Tuscumbia in northern Alabama, nearly 200 miles away, as the crow flies.Col. Miles didn't know that. He thought Forrest was nearby enough to send a rider with the message. Discrepancies between fact and fiction are usually made for dramatic reasons, AKA Artistic License.
