When Payne handcuffs Annie to the pole in the subway car, she is facing the pole with her arms in front of her. When the subway car crashes out onto the street and tips over, the pole breaks, freeing Annie. At this point we can see that she is handcuffed with her back to the pole with her arms over her head, handcuffed around the pole.
