Xu Wenwu says that the westerner named his fake terrorist, the Mandarin, after an orange. The Mandarin name actually comes from the western term for bureaucrats of the Chinese empire. The term is an adaptation of a Malay word for an official. The term "mandarin orange" comes from European languages and has no etymological relation to the word for a Chinese official.
