In the opening credits, CPO Sharkey is wearing his dress blues with gold stripes, In the opening of the first episode, when Chief Sharkey is reenlisting, he is shown with red stripes. Gold stripes were earned by having 12 continuous years of good conduct. Therefore, it wouldn't make sense for him to be wearing red stripes when he had already earned gold ones.
