In a big difference over the book, in the last fight scene, Harry Potter actually kills professor Quirrell. He turns Quirrell into stone, which then falls and crumbles to dust. This would mean that Harry, at 11 years old just killed an adult. He seems to be rather unaffected by it in the following scenes. It would also mean that Harry should be able to see Thestrals at least upon his return to his 4th year at school, even if the death of his parents didn't ensure this (His 2nd and 3rd year he never sees the carriages in order to see the Thestrals). The Thestrals weren't introduced until the fifth book, which was published after this film was released, so the filmmakers probably didn't know about them at the time.
