When Clark goes to hide Christmas gifts in the attic, he pulls down the attic ladder and it slides down and hits him. The next scene he is seen trying to alert a family member that he is stuck in the attic by "knocking" the attic ladder on itself. One type of attic ladder pulls down then slides to the floor, the other type pulls down then folds out/hinges open to reach the floor. The slide type ladder does not have hinging ladder sections just as a hinging ladder does not have sliding ladder sections.
