On the DVD with Directors Commentary, Brad Peyton states that each one-tenth increase in the Richter scale, ie: from 9.5 to 9.6, is an increase in the severity of the earthquake by 100 times. Actually, the increase in severity, though still severe, is far less; each whole number increase; ie: from 8.0 to 9.0, is an increase in severity of 10 times.
