Marty attempts to cover-up for mentioning that he was aware of the real story of how Biff's car was damaged in 1955 by claiming that his father told him before his death. As his mother, Lorraine, was witness to the entire event as well, it would have been perfectly reasonable for Marty to claim that she was the one who told him about it.
