Dr. Willet talks about "mutation" in the town of Arkham. This part of the story is set around 1875, about 20 years before the word took on the modern biological or genetic meaning in 1894. (In fairness, though, the word does date back to the late 14th century as a rare synonym for a change, especially a negative change. Dr. Willet could have just coincidentally grabbed at this old word to describe what was happening to the townsfolk, but it's awfully prescient of him.)
