Katherine describes the reentry problem as a transition from an elliptical orbit to a parabolic "orbit." The parabolic orbit, or more correctly parabolic trajectory since it takes an infinite time to complete, is the boundary case between a looping orbit and an escape orbit. So transition to a parabolic "orbit" would not bring you back to earth at all. Breaking for return using retro thrust, reduced the altitude of the orbit which remains elliptical, and reentry occurs when the ellipse intersects the Earth's atmosphere.
