When we see Starkiller Base from space, it appears to be a large man made object with the 'weapon' protruding from an opening. The surface is flat. When the 'weapon' is fired on the Republic and the general is speaking to his troops, we see snow capped mountains and when the weapon fires, we see trees surrounding the firing point.Likewise when Hans, Chewie, Rey, and Finn attack Starkiller Base from the ground they are also in a forest like on a planet not an extremely large satellite.As made clear by the Youtube channel "New Rockstars" at 35:40 through the video "Star wars force awakens all Easter eggs and references (FULL MOVIE)", Starkiller Base is actually a weapon built into an already-existing, unknown planet, which would explain why there is mountains and trees around unlike the death star which is a fully man made satellite.
