In the opening sequence the sun's position is 'variable' and darkness is simulated in the common way of stopping down about four stops and underexposing; however the sun is still a very obvious effect. In some shots it appears to be totally dark, in others the sun is reflected off the water, it is high overhead as viewed from underwater, and it is behind a low cloud in some shots down the length of the beach. There are also lots of distant small boats on the water in some shots, which would be rather odd in the hours of darkness.
