The formal tunics seen in this film are red. In real life the dress tunics (which, in the novel were for the Royal North Surrey Regiment) were blue. The director of the 1939 version of this film was a stickler for authenticity but when he saw that the costumer was preparing blue tunics he lost his temper, saying that they were spending a lavish amount to shoot in Technicolor (a huge deal in that day) so the tunics must be red. For some reason the regiment was changed and the red tunics continued in the present film.
