Doc tells Marty that with out gasoline the DeLorean won't run, but natural gas and natural oil were available during 1885. Doc's genius abilities would have enabled him to create enough fuel for the car, along with using ethanol made from distilled plant material. He could also use a a high proof 190 moonshine mixture to run the car for a short period of time, which would be enough to get the car up to 88 MPH.
