When Jackson tells Captain Miller the sniper is 450 yards away, it appears the church is much closer than 450 yards. The reason for this is because the first shot of the church was filmed using a camera equipped with a long lens. Using a long lens will cause objects in the background to appear much closer. An earlier shot and a subsequent shot of the church shows it is situated much farther back than 100 yards and is in line with Jackson's estimate of 450 yards.
