DeGroat wasn't at his house when SWAT closed in on it, and it was suggested he knew he was a fugitive for murder. When Russell anonymously called DeGroat to lure him to Petty's office, it would have been obvious that there was some kind of ambush going on, either by law enforcement or someone close to DeGroat's victims.
