Alan sank through the floor so that only his face was level with the floor. When Nora saw him hanging from the ceiling only his hips to legs were visible. This suggested that the cavity between the floorboards in the upper room and the ceiling in lower room was at least two feet deep which is unreasonable. However, this house is quite old, and building styles have changed considerably through time. It is reasonable for a mansion to have a 2 foot gap in order to allow for insulation between the levels.
