The mechanics of the movie's world change depending on the scene. In the beginning, all the food icons become active after the store closes for the night, and they have to disappear when the store opens in the morning. During daytime, the Ikes seem to be aware of what's going on in the real world, but are unable to react to it. Later on, the Ikes walk around the store in broad daylight, among the humans. When they "break through" the store shelves, they appear back in their own world. Later still, Mr. Clipboard somehow shows up inside the market world, and Lady X reveals that she's had plastic surgery and seduced humans, despite being a brand mascot the size of a human hand.
