Towards the end of the film, Finch tells Ava that, since her dad fired the shot that killed the shark (and he's dead now), she has to be the one to kill the ghost shark. Ava's dad didn't kill the shark; Ava's dad owned the boat that the guy who did kill the shark hired. If anything, Ava's dad tried to stop the other guy from killing the shark.
